Working with the preparations in October — autumn cultivation and the full making cycle

Barrel compost and horn manure carry the autumn cultivation, and the autumn making cycle is in full swing: burying horn manure, digging up horn silica, setting up the compost preparations.

In October, autumn work is in full swing. Barrel compost and horn manure accompany stubble cultivation, fertilising and autumn sowing; in winter cereals, horn silica provides the ripening impulse. At the same time, the full making cycle is due — the soil takes in the preparations for next year.

Burying horn manure now and bringing up the summer horn silica closes the circle of the year.

Grassland and arable land

  • Grassland: after the last cut or grazing, horn manure and barrel compost; a silica application about two weeks later, depending on the state of the soil.
  • Cereals: barrel compost for stubble cultivation and fertilising; horn manure for autumn sowing and sowing catch crops; horn silica in winter cereals from the three-leaf stage.

Vegetable garden

  • Barrel compost on harvested beds.
  • Horn manure and horn silica according to the stage of development; horsetail preparation when fungal pressure is high.

Vines and fruit

  • Barrel compost on the leaves (before leaf fall, after harvest).
  • Combine an autumn manure application with a dose of barrel compost.

Making — the full autumn cycle

  • Horn manure (500): fill horns with manure and bury them.
  • Horn silica (501): dig up the summer horns.
  • Compost preparations: set up yarrow (502), chamomile (503) and dandelion (506).

The full process with all sheaths and timings is described in the article Making biodynamic preparations in autumn.
