Mowing and sowing the lawn by the moon calendar 2026

Grass is a leaf plant: sowing and cutting belong on the leaf day. Whoever wants a dense lawn mows in the descending moon; whoever wants to mow less often mows in the ascending moon. The rule comes from Pierre Masson and applies to every cut.

The next days for the lawn

Days with a descending moon in the next four weeks: mowing for dense growth, sowing, feeding, scarifying. Leaf days are marked; unfavourable hours are listed with their times.

Times for Europe/London

Mowing is pruning

Pierre Masson distinguishes pruning by the moon’s course: in the descending moon the cut strengthens the plant and makes it more vital, in the ascending moon it checks overly vigorous growth. Applied to the lawn: mow in the descending moon for a dense lawn that closes its gaps. Mow in the ascending moon when the lawn should regrow more slowly, in high summer or before a holiday.

The list above shows the days with a descending moon. The days with an ascending moon are on the pages for harvesting and grafting. Masson advises keeping the chosen rhythm for several years.

Leaf day for grass

The day type follows the part of the plant being tended. Grass is kept for its leaves and belongs to the leaf day: the moon then stands in front of Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces. Masson calls the leaf day the day on which leaf vegetables grow evenly. Mowing, sowing and overseeding therefore sit best on a leaf day, in the course you have chosen.

Sowing and overseeding the lawn

Sow on a leaf day in the descending moon, like any planting. Masson calls the descending moon the planting period, good for all plantings. The soil sets the season: grass seed germinates in warm soil, in spring and in late summer.

Before sowing, the soil is loosened. Soil work belongs to the root day and to the descending moon; at lunar nodes and perigee it rests. After sowing comes watering; the suitable days are on the watering page.

Feeding and scarifying

Feed in the descending moon; a leaf day suits the lawn. Scarifying is soil work: descending moon, root day, outside the unfavourable hours. Masson observed that after soil work with the moon in Capricorn less weed germinates, with the moon in Leo a great deal. Whoever scarifies therefore prefers a root day in Capricorn where it can be arranged.

Full moon and perigee

The calendar does not block full and new moon. When the full moon coincides with perigee, the time is considered favourable for fungal diseases; Masson then advises against cutting and sprays horsetail as a precaution.

Hours to avoid

Lunar nodes, perigee, the occultation of a planet by the moon, planetary nodes and eclipses count as unfavourable in the biodynamic calendar, whatever the day type. So do the days from Good Friday to sunrise on Easter Sunday.

The list above names such hours with their times. If fewer than two suitable hours remain between 6 am and 9 pm on a day, that day is left out.

Frequently asked questions about the lawn by the moon

When to mow the lawn by the moon calendar?

On a leaf day in the descending moon when the lawn should become dense. In the ascending moon when it should regrow more slowly. The next days with a descending moon are listed at the top of this page.

Mow the lawn on a waxing or waning moon?

For cutting, the biodynamic calendar counts the moon’s course: ascending or descending. Waxing and waning describe the moon’s light, a different movement.

When to sow a lawn by the moon?

On a leaf day in the descending moon, outside the unfavourable hours. The soil sets the season: in warm soil in spring or in late summer.

When to feed the lawn by the moon calendar?

In the descending moon; a leaf day suits. The next days are listed above.

When to scarify by the moon?

In the descending moon on a root day, by Masson’s observation best with the moon in Capricorn. At lunar nodes and perigee, soil work rests.

Mow the lawn at full moon?

The calendar does not block the full moon. When it coincides with perigee, Masson advises against cutting, because the time is considered favourable for fungal diseases.
