Fertilising and soil work by the moon
Feeding, composting and loosening the soil are done in the descending moon. By the picture of biodynamic practice, the forces then turn into soil and root. For soil work and compost, the root day is the day to choose.

Descending moon
In the descending moon, tradition sees the forces in soil and root. This time therefore counts as the preferred time for feeding, loosening the soil and compost work.
The root day
On a root day you loosen the soil and work in compost. Root days come with Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, the three constellations of the element earth. The moon needs a little over three days to cross Virgo, and the root day lasts that long there.
Horn manure in the soil impulse
The field spray preparation horn manure (500) is preferably applied in the descending or waning moon. It is used for the root zone and soil life.
Eckard von Wistinghausen describes the timing first through season, time of day and weather: horn manure goes onto the field in autumn and from the start of growth in spring, ideally in the afternoon to evening under an overcast sky.
When the soil rests
For some hours before and after the nodes of the moon and the planets, and during eclipses, Pierre Masson recommends neither working the soil nor turning compost. These hours are for work in the workshop and the office.
The list above gives the unfavourable hours with their times, together with perigee, occultations and the Easter days. If fewer than two suitable hours remain free between 6 am and 9 pm, the day is left out of the list.
Frequently asked questions about fertilising by the moon
When do you fertilise by the lunar calendar?
In the descending moon. Compost and soil work belong to the root day. The next suitable days are at the top of this page.
Fertilise in a waxing or waning moon?
For feeding, the biodynamic calendar goes mainly by the moon’s course: feeding is done in the descending moon. Horn manure (500) is preferably sprayed in the descending or waning moon.
When do you turn compost?
In the descending moon, preferably on a root day, and not in the hours around the lunar nodes.
When do you loosen the soil by the moon?
On a root day in the descending moon.
