Houseplants by the moon calendar 2026

The rules of the planting calendar also apply on the windowsill. Repotting and feeding happen in the descending moon, watering on leaf days. The plant sets the day type: foliage plants belong to the leaf day, flowering plants to the flower day, citrus and chilli to the fruit day.

The next days for repotting and feeding

Days with a descending moon in the next four weeks. Leaf and flower days are marked; unfavourable hours are listed with their times.

Times for Europe/London

Repotting in the descending moon

In the descending moon, tradition sees the sap in the lower part of the plant. Repotting and pricking out fall into this time, for houseplants as for vegetables on the windowsill. The plant sets the day type: monstera, ferns, pothos and other foliage plants belong to the leaf day, orchids, indoor azaleas and poinsettias to the flower day, citrus, chilli and coffee to the fruit day.

The list above shows the days with a descending moon and marks leaf and flower days. Repot once the plant has rooted through its pot, usually in spring at the start of growth.

Watering on leaf days

In the biodynamic calendar, water belongs to the leaf day: the moon then stands in front of Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces. Pierre Masson also counts full moon and perigee among the water times. Water when the soil needs it; the calendar chooses among those days. In the greenhouse Masson advises watering in the morning, and the same holds at the window. The next leaf days are on the watering page.

Feeding in the descending moon

Feed in the descending moon. Liquid feed in the watering can combines both: a leaf day in the descending moon. In the winter rest from October to February most houseplants get little water and no feed; feeding starts again with the new growth in spring.

Cutting back

Pierre Masson distinguishes pruning: in the descending moon it strengthens the plant, in the ascending moon it checks overly vigorous growth. Houseplants that should become denser and bushier are therefore cut in the descending moon on the day type of their kind. A plant that is getting too big gets its cut in the ascending moon.

Container plants in winter quarters

Oleander, citrus and other container plants overwinter bright and cool and are watered sparingly, best on leaf days. They go outside again in spring after the last frosts; repotting before moving out falls into the descending moon.

Hours to avoid

Lunar nodes, perigee, the occultation of a planet by the moon, planetary nodes and eclipses count as unfavourable in the biodynamic calendar, whatever the day type. So do the days from Good Friday to sunrise on Easter Sunday.

The list above names such hours with their times. If fewer than two suitable hours remain between 6 am and 9 pm on a day, that day is left out.
