Weeding by the moon calendar 2026

Weeding and hoeing are soil work. Biodynamic practice puts them into the descending moon on a root day. Pierre Masson observed: after soil work with the moon in Capricorn less weed germinates, soil work with the moon in Leo wakes many seeds in the soil.

The next days for weeding

Days with a descending moon in the next four weeks. Root days and days with the moon in Capricorn are marked; unfavourable hours are listed with their times.

Times for Europe/London

Soil work in the descending moon

In the descending moon, tradition sees the forces in the soil and the root. Planting, feeding, compost and all soil work fall into this time, so hoeing and weeding too. The day type for it is the root day: the moon then stands in front of Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn. Masson puts shallow incorporation into the descending moon, where possible in the evening of a root day.

Capricorn and Leo

Masson describes an observation from practice: after working the soil with the moon in Capricorn, less weed germinates. Working it with the moon in Leo, on the other hand, breaks the dormancy of many seeds in the soil. Whoever wants to keep weeds down therefore hoes on a root day in Capricorn. The list above marks these days.

Masson also describes the stale seedbed: the soil is prepared as for sowing, the weeds are allowed to germinate and are hoed off shallowly before the actual sowing. Whoever combines the two prepares the stale seedbed with the moon in Leo and hoes in Capricorn.

Hoe in the morning or in the evening

Masson observes the daily rhythm: hoeing in the morning removes surplus moisture, hoeing in the evening prevents water loss in dry weather. So on wet soil you weed in the morning, in drought in the evening. Hoed weeds dry off in the morning sun and do not root again.

Ground elder, couch grass, bindweed: the extract after Maria Thun

Against weeds that spread by rhizomes and runners, Masson names an extract made from the plants themselves. Maria Thun advises stirring it on leaf days, waiting for the runner and rhizome parts to rot, and spraying the liquid on three evenings in a row, best when the moon stands in front of the constellation Cancer.

Lunar nodes and perigee

At lunar nodes and perigee, soil work rests; Masson names the nodes explicitly. The list above shows such hours with their times, along with the occultation of a planet by the moon, planetary nodes, eclipses and the days from Good Friday to sunrise on Easter Sunday. If fewer than two suitable hours remain between 6 am and 9 pm on a day, that day is left out.

Frequently asked questions about weeding by the moon

When to weed by the moon calendar?

In the descending moon on a root day, by Masson’s observation best with the moon in Capricorn. The next days are listed at the top of this page.

Weed on a waxing or waning moon?

For soil work, the biodynamic calendar counts the moon’s course: weeding happens in the descending moon. Waxing and waning describe the moon’s light, a different movement.

Which constellation for weeding?

Capricorn. Masson observed that after soil work with the moon in Capricorn less weed germinates. With the moon in Leo a great deal germinates, which is used only for the stale seedbed.

Weed in the morning or in the evening?

By Masson, hoeing in the morning takes surplus moisture, hoeing in the evening keeps water in the soil in dry weather. On wet soil in the morning, in drought in the evening.

Fighting ground elder and couch grass by the moon?

With the extract after Maria Thun: stir on leaf days, spray on three evenings in a row, best with the moon in front of Cancer. Plus hoeing in the descending moon on a root day.

Hoe at full moon?

The calendar does not block the full moon. For hoeing, the moon’s course, the day type and the unfavourable hours count.
