Applying horn manure 500 — the right time

When horn manure (500) is sprayed — spring and autumn, warm and moist soil, afternoon to evening. Quantities, crops and how often to apply it.

Alongside horn silica (501), horn manure (500) is the most important field spray preparation in biodynamic growing. It supports arable land, vegetables, meadows, vines and fruit in taking up nutrients and water from the soil, and it acts on soil life. For it to do that, timing matters. This article explains when horn manure is applied — by season, soil condition, time of day and lunar rhythm.

The best season: spring and autumn

Horn manure is applied above all in spring and autumn — whenever the soil is warm and moist at the same time. This soil condition matters more than any other rule.

In spring the preparation is sprayed at the start of the growing season: vines, fruit trees and shrubs shortly before or right at leaf break, onto soil, trunk and crown. Meadows and winter cereals as soon as the ground can be driven on. Summer crops at sowing or planting. Vegetable land is treated once as a whole at the beginning of the year; further sprayings follow at the main sowing and planting dates.

In autumn, at the end of the growing season, when the soil is still warm and moist again, it is sprayed once more: winter cereals and catch crops at sowing, vines and fruit trees directly after harvest. Meadows can be treated after every cut; the spraying after the last cut is especially important, as it takes the area into winter rest in balance. The same applies to pastures after the animals have been taken off.

Time of day and weather

Horn manure is sprayed in the afternoon and evening, preferably under an overcast sky. Avoid the heat of midday and days with drying or cold winds. Eckard von Wistinghausen describes the preparation as applied to moved, freshly worked or planted soil — in early spring as early as possible, in growing weather.

The lunar rhythm as an additional layer

Tradition prefers to place horn manure in the descending or waning Moon — that is, in the soil impulse, when the growth forces draw more strongly into the root zone. This placement makes sense, but it is secondary: Pierre Masson explicitly advises against interpreting the lunar timing of the preparations too rigidly, because the truly fitting periods are short. If you wait for the ideal lunar window and miss the warm, moist soil in the process, you have gained nothing. Soil condition and weather come before the calendar. How the two lunar rhythms interact is covered in depth in the guide Gardening by the Moon.

Quantities and application

According to Masson, about 100 g of horn manure is stirred in 30 to 35 litres of water per hectare; in the home garden it is about 10 to 20 g in 5 to 10 litres. The preparation is dynamised for an hour and applied if possible within two to three hours — details in the article Stirring the preparations. As an additional use, Masson recommends horn manure as an addition to root dips, into which plants are dipped before planting.

In drought and heat

In dry, hot summers horn manure helps plants cope with the strain and not slip into drought stress so quickly. A proven practice in extreme drought: spray horn manure in the evening and horn silica the next morning to stimulate growth. Walter Stappung has described the practice in drought in detail.

Don't overdo it

Applying it twice — spring and autumn — is the standard. During conversion to biodynamic farming, horn manure may be applied three to four times, because the soil is only just adjusting. In vegetable growing it is used more often to meet the needs of individual crops.

Applying it too often — five times or more — is considered risky, however: the plant can become more susceptible to disease, and the keeping quality of the harvest can suffer. That is why horn manure always goes together with horn silica 501. The two preparations work harmoniously together as counterparts and balance each other.

Frequently asked questions

When is horn manure sprayed?

Above all in spring at the start of the growing season and in autumn at its end, each time when the soil is warm and moist, in the afternoon and evening.

How often a year?

The standard is twice — spring and autumn. During conversion or in vegetable growing more often, but five applications or more are considered risky.

In what weather?

Under an overcast sky, not in the midday heat and not in drying or cold winds. Not in heavy rain.

Horn manure or horn silica first?

Over the year, horn manure comes first (soil impulse in spring); horn silica follows one to two weeks later onto the growing crop.

Conclusion

With horn manure, the soil decides: warm and moist, in spring and autumn, in the afternoon or evening. The descending Moon is a sensible additional layer, but no reason to miss the good soil window. Applied in moderation and complemented by horn silica 501, horn manure is the foundation of biodynamic work with the preparations.
