How to read today’s calendar
At the top you see which day it is today in the biodynamic calendar. It depends on the constellation in front of which the Moon is standing. Every constellation belongs to an element and every element to a part of the plant: earth to the root, water to the leaf, light to the flower, warmth to the fruit. When the Moon moves into another constellation during the day, the day type changes too. The time of the change is shown in the day band.
- Root day: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
- Carrots, beetroot, potatoes, onions — everything that grows below ground.
- Leaf day: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
- Lettuce, spinach, cabbage, herbs — everything grown for its leaves.
- Flower day: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
- Flowers, broccoli, artichokes — everything that blooms.
- Fruit day: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
- Tomatoes, beans, grain, fruit — everything that bears fruit.
Then there is the Moon’s course. When the Moon is ascending, it is time for harvesting, grafting and cut flowers. When it is descending, it is time for planting and transplanting, pruning and compost. The ascending and descending course describes the Moon’s path across the sky and runs independently of the waxing and waning Moon.
Some hours are unfavourable, and no sowing or planting is done then: around the lunar node, around the Moon’s perigee, during an eclipse and while the Moon covers a planet. The day band shows these times with their start and end. Before and after, the day type applies.
