Moon gardening calendars 2027 compared

A moon calendar for the garden tells you what to sow, plant or harvest on each day. The calendars on offer do not all calculate the same way. Biodynamic calendars in the tradition of Maria Thun look at the constellation the Moon stands in front of in the sky. Others follow the signs of the astrological zodiac or only the phases of the Moon. For the same day they often give different advice.

This comparison covers the moon gardening calendars most used in the UK, Ireland and North America: books, almanacs, apps and free calendars online, with price, basis of calculation and what they show for each day. We checked prices and details with the publishers in October 2026.

What matters in a moon calendar

The basis of calculation. A calendar by the constellations and one by the zodiac signs are about 30 degrees apart, which is two to three days. A calendar that only follows the waxing and waning Moon knows nothing of root, leaf, flower and fruit days. If you garden biodynamically or follow Maria Thun, you need a calendar by the constellations.

The times. The Moon rarely changes constellation at midnight. A good calendar gives the time from which the next day type applies and says which time zone it uses. A calendar printed for London is hours out in New York or Sydney.

Unfavourable times. The biodynamic calendar leaves hours free in which you neither sow nor plant: lunar nodes, perigee, planetary nodes, occultations and eclipses.

Ascending and waxing Moon kept apart. The ascending Moon is not the same as the waxing Moon. Planting out and harvesting follow the Moon's path through the sky, some sowings follow the phase. The difference is explained on Ascending and descending Moon.

Constellation or zodiac sign

The signs of the astrological zodiac start at the vernal point, where the Sun stands at the March equinox. Through precession this point slowly moves backwards through the constellations. Today signs and constellations are about 30 degrees apart. Biodynamic calendars work with the constellations in the sky and their unequal widths: Virgo is more than twice as wide as Cancer, and the Moon stays there longer. Dyyna biodynamic planting calendar

The Dyyna biodynamic planting calendar is free online: the moon calendar for today, every month and all of 2027. For each day it shows the constellation and the day type with the time of change, ascending or descending Moon, phase and the unfavourable times: lunar nodes, perigee, planetary nodes, occultations, eclipses and the Easter days. Every month prints free on one A4 page from the month page, for example November 2026.

It calculates the times for the time zone of your device, and in the southern hemisphere with the Moon's path reversed, so it works for gardens in Australia and New Zealand too. For particular jobs there are pages with the next suitable days, for example planting by the Moon, pruning by the Moon or tomatoes by the Moon. The Dyyna app is in preparation.

Maria Thun Biodynamic Calendar

The calendar of Maria Thun comes out in English with Floris Books in Edinburgh. The 2027 edition by Titia and Friedrich Thun, translated by Bernard Jarman, was published on 17 September 2026: 88 pages, £8.99 (ISBN 9781782509974), two weeks to view with a pull-out wallchart. Floris describes it as “trusted by farmers and gardeners for 65 years”. The Biodynamic Association in the UK names the basis: the Moon's sidereal cycle, which “forms the basis of the biodynamic calendar”.

For the US and Canada there is the North American Maria Thun Biodynamic Almanac 2027 (ISBN 9781782509967), £8.99 or US$14.99 from SteinerBooks, with times in Eastern Standard Time. Further west you subtract the hours yourself.

Floris also offers the Biodynamic Gardening Calendar app. Today and past days are free; the full calendar, with 2027 already included, needs an annual subscription, £6.99 or $6.99 on the App Store. The app adjusts to your time zone. Floris gives no information on the southern hemisphere.

Stella Natura

Stella Natura is published by the Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary in Virginia. The 2027 calendar has 44 pages in 9 × 12 inch format and costs US$19.95; in early October 2026 it was at the printer. It is “based on the Moon's passage through the constellations of the zodiac”. A Spanish edition is also available.

Calendars by astrological signs

Farmers' Almanac

The Farmers' Almanac from Maine has a gardening calendar online. A short window is free; the full calendar is part of All-Access membership at US$13.99 a year. It works with the astrological signs and gives date ranges for above-ground and root crops, without root, leaf, flower and fruit days.

Old Farmer's Almanac

The Old Farmer's Almanac has a free planting calendar by ZIP or postal code for the US and Canada, based on the Moon's phases. Its separate “Best Days” follow the astrological Moon signs. The 2027 almanac in print costs US$10.95.

To find out what a calendar calculates by, compare one month with a biodynamic calendar. If the day types are two to three days apart, the calendar follows the zodiac signs.

Which moon calendar for whom

Biodynamic gardening. If you work with Maria Thun, use the preparations or farm to Demeter standards, you need a calendar by the constellations with unfavourable times: Dyyna, the Maria Thun calendar or Stella Natura.

A look every day. If you check the day in the morning before going out to the garden, an online calendar with times for your location serves you best.

Gardening outside the UK. A printed calendar calculates for one time zone. In North America the times differ, in Australia and New Zealand the Moon's ascending and descending path is also reversed. Dyyna calculates for the location of your device.

Is there a Maria Thun calendar 2027 PDF?

Floris Books sells the calendar in print and as an app. The days by the same basis of calculation are free in the Dyyna calendar, for the coming months as well.

Why do moon calendars differ?

Because they calculate differently. Through precession, signs and constellations are today about 30 degrees apart. The same position of the Moon is called Gemini in one calendar and Taurus in another, and the day type changes. Time zones come on top.

Does a moon calendar work in the southern hemisphere?

The constellation is the same all over the world, the times are not. And in the southern hemisphere the ascending and descending Moon are reversed. You need a calendar that calculates for your own location.
