Gardening by the moon with Maria Thun: how the planting days work
Maria Thun (1922–2012) spent decades studying how plants respond to the Moon’s position in front of the constellations of the zodiac. Her sowing calendar has appeared every year since 1963. The division into root, leaf, flower and fruit days comes from her.
Each constellation belongs to an element, and each element to a part of the plant. When the Moon stands in front of an earth constellation it is a root day; in front of a water constellation a leaf day, a light constellation a flower day and a warmth constellation a fruit day.
What counts are the constellations in the sky. They differ in size, so the Moon stays in front of them for different lengths of time.
On top of that come hours that are best avoided for work with plants: around the lunar nodes, the Moon’s perigee, planetary nodes and eclipses. The descending Moon is planting time, the time for setting out and transplanting.
Plants after Maria Thun: which vegetable on which day

Maria Thun and the preparations

Who was Maria Thun?
Maria Thun (1922–2012) grew up on a farm near Marburg and came to biodynamic agriculture in the 1940s. For decades she tested in growing trials how plants respond to the moon in front of the constellations. In 1963 she published her first sowing calendar; barrel compost also goes back to her.
