The biodynamic planting calendar assigns every day to a part of the plant. The deciding factor is the constellation in front of which the moon stands. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces belong to the element Water and bring the leaf day. The system goes back to Maria Thun.

The moon passes through the twelve constellations once in a good 27 days. In each round the leaf day comes up three times, about nine days apart. Before it comes the flower day, after it the fruit day.

What to do on a leaf day

On a leaf day you sow and plant what is grown for its leaves: lettuce, spinach, cabbage, herbs. Grass is a leaf plant too: sowing and mowing the lawn belong to the leaf day, as does cutting leafy hedges.

In the biodynamic calendar water belongs to the leaf day. Whoever waters by the moon takes the leaf days. Pierre Masson describes them as strongly marked by water and therefore harvests vegetables for storage on other days.

How long a leaf day lasts

The constellations differ in width across the sky, so the periods differ in length. Cancer spans only 20 degrees of the ecliptic; the moon crosses it in about a day and a half. The constellation rarely changes at midnight. The list above gives start and end to the minute.

Hours to avoid

Lunar nodes, perigee, planetary nodes, the occultation of a planet by the moon and eclipses count as unfavourable in the biodynamic calendar, whatever the day type. Which hours these are on a given day is shown in the calendar’s month view.
